August 2019 The Team I have been in research labs for over 20 years, and this is by far the most amazing team I have ever had the privilege of working with. This team is: intelligent, talented in what they do, cohesive, responsible, conscientious, easy to work with, and exceptionally productive. They make my job easy. As an added bonus, they are without question the most fun team I have ever known. I feel fortunate every day, knowing that I get to interact with this incredible group of people. This month, I want to recognize our “work family” for everything they do to make this lab a wonderfu... Read More

July 2019 Yvonne Having never worked in academia or in a lab setting prior to joining our group, this position may have seemed ‘foreign’ to Yvonne when she initially started. However, Yvonne is a great example of someone who truly grew to “own” her position within our team. She welcomed new challenges and successfully mastered the position. She now leads all administrative and financial aspects of our group, and she continues to develop and implement new strategies that help us to work more efficiently. Above and beyond her job responsibilities, Yvonne brings warmth, patience, and maturity to... Read More

    Saturday, June 1, 2019
Stefan Koester joined the Hecker lab during the first semester of his freshman year and continued until he recently graduated.  He has accomplished a great deal during this time.  At the Chemistry and Biochemistry Poster Conference (UA College of Science), Stefan’s poster entitled “Preclinical Testing of a Novel Nox4 Inhibitor for the Treatment of Pathological Fibrosis”, won 2 awards: a scientific award for excellence in Biological Sciences, and the Viewer’s choice award. He has also sought out and obtained his own research grant funding, including a $1,500 “Spirit of Inquiry Award” to continu... Read More

May 2019 Kosuke Since he joined the lab, Kosuke has been a ray of sunshine within our group. He is delightfully positive and funny, extremely hard-working, and he is a great thinker/writer. He was a rising star this month at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) international conference, where he made great networking connections. He was also instrumental to the development of a submitted R01 application, where he will play a key role as a Co-Investigator. Kosuke brings a dimension to our group that fills in the gaps…like a puzzle piece that was missing and is now in place to complete the big p... Read More

April 2019 Sunny Sunny has always been a major “driver” of several projects within the lab. More recently, she has taken on additional responsibilities, including the lead on our DoD drug project.  She has also taken a role as the Director of pre-clinical research for our spin-out company, Fibronox. She showed her talent in the business arena this month at the Science2Startup conference in Cambridge, MA. As her leadership roles within the group continue to increase, she has consistently proven that she can rise to any new challenge. One thing is for sure: Sunny was born to be a leader. This m... March 2019 Skye Rounseville, Sydney Rummel, and Joseph Irish   This month, we acknowledge three of our undergraduate superstars (Skye, Sydney, and Joey) for working exceptionally hard (day and night!) to put together stellar presentations for the Tri-Beta regional conference in Fort Collins, CO (3/29-30). They gave oral presentations, where Skye placed 2nd and Joey placed 3rd overall in the oral competition. They will now move onto the finals at the national conference. CONGRATS!
